ATTRACTIONS
OF KINOSAKI

RYOKAN

Ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, is more than just a hotel or a place to sleep

Enjoy a traditional kaiseki dinner while wearing your yukata (casual kimono robes worn at ryokan). Some ryokan will serve the dinner in your guest room. Many ryokan feature Japanese-style guest rooms with tatami mat floors, shoji paper sliding doors, futon bedding, relaxing natural views and more.

ONSEN

Tour the hot springs with a 1,300 year history

"Onsen" is the Japanese word for "hot spring" and Kinosaki Onsen is famed for its 7 public bathouses ("sotoyu"), each with its own unique style. The tradition of strolling bath-to-bath known as "sotoyu meguri" is the town's number one activity. Visitors staying at a ryokan in Kinosaki can use the public baths for free.

REGIONAL FOOD

Kinosaki's rich food culture captivates visitors

Matsuba crab (Japanese snow crab) Known for its ample size, fluffy & sweet crab meat, Japanese travelers flock to Kinosaki Onsen during the winter specifically to enjoy this snow crab known locally as "Matsuba crab". The crab fished from the nearby Sea of Japan is only available seasonally from November 7th to the end of March.

Tajima beef
You have probalby heard of Kobe beef - Japan's most premium wagyu - but Tajima beef, the local wagyu beef of Kinosaki, is the true origin of this world famous brand. Only Tajima cattle which meet the strictest standards achieve the label of Kobe beef. Known for its flavor, tenderness and well-marbled texture, experiencing Tajima beef for yourself is a must for any fan of Japanese cuisine.

Soba noodles
Soba, or buckwheat noodles, are a Japanese favorite on both cold and hot days. While the noodles are often served in a bowl or large plate, in Izushi (near to Kinosaki) mini portions served on small ornate plates and called "Izushi sara soba" make for a healthy lunch and good reason to visit the scenic town with a castle at the center as well as an old-style kabuki theater.

SAKE

Sake - Japan's national beverage - is without a doubt a deep part of the culinary culture of Kinosaki & its surroundings

Sake is nothing more than an alcoholic beverage brewed from fermented rice. Its sharp, crisp tastes make sake a particularly good companion for the many local cuisines you will enjoy in this part of Japan.

Local brewers take pride in brewing original sakes that reflect the identify of their home nestled near the Sea of Japan - known as the Tajima region. In fact, in Japan there are several schools of sake that brewing masters called "toji" will follow and one of the largest is known as "Tajima toji" as it originated from this region where the long winters meant less agricultural work which encouraged development of other earning opportunities such as sake brewing.

Stay two nights or more to sample the many different regional sakes and perhaps even tour a local brewery.

STROLLING

Relaxing in the hot springs of Kinosaki is without a doubt the main draw, but strolling through the walkable town while soaking in the quaint ambience is just as praise worthy

After checking-in to your ryokan, don a yukata (casual light kimono) and geta sandals (wooden clogs) as you step out for a brisk stroll and take in the cinematic surroundings.

Don't limit yourself to Kinosaki, either. The nearby fishing village of Takeno & ancient castle town of Izushi are perfect for exploring by foot, the mountain towns of Hidaka & Tanto reveal lush Japanese nature most Japanese do not typically see with their own eyes, and at the center the compact city of Toyooka, which is home the Oriental White Stork preserve & park.

ART & CULTURE

Kinosaki and the surrounding towns boast many cultural treasures to explore for yourself

Kinosaki is known for "mugiwara zaiku", a traditional craft in which individual pieces of finely cut colored straw are arranged into intricate designs on things like container boxes, ornamental bells, postcards, and other. A simple craft easy to start, but it takes years to master the art of creating complex, beautiful arrangements.

Similarly, nearby Toyooka City has long been known for its "kiryu zaiku" craft of weaving objects out of things like wicker. In particular, Toyooka was very noted for the production of wicker bags and trunks which sparked its growth into the leading bag manufacturer city in Japan, which it remains to this day.

In Izushi you can try your hand at making buckwheat soba noodles for a filling & healthy meal, or tour the grounds of Izushi castle or the 100+ year old Eiraku theater which is the oldes kabuki theater in Western Japan still operating at its original location.

OUTDOOR

Traveling to Kinosaki also gives you the chance to visit the Japanese countryside - something many people miss out on, even after multiple trips to Japan

Beyond the hustle and bustle of Japans magnificent metropolises, and even outside of the quiet room of your ryokan in Kinosaki, is a splendid world of natural wonders to experience with your own eyes.

Take a quick cable car ride to the top of the Kinosaki Onsen ropeway and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Sea of Japan from the cafe at the top. Alternatively there is a hiking trail along side the ropeway which you can hike up or down (or both if you are up to it!). At the midpoint is Onsenji temple - the main temple in Kinosaki.

Just a 10 min train ride from Kinosaki is Takeno, a fishing village known for its gorgeous beach that is one of Japan's top swimming beaches. It crystal waters (no exaggeration) and gorgeous green surroundings make this a real hidden gem of a location.

The town of Hidaka located in the nearby Kannabe highlands is a perfect place for outdoor hiking/sports in all seasons. The town is one of Hyogo prefecture's top skiing destinations during the winter.

FASHION

Wearing yukata is highly recommended when visiting Kinosaki Onsen

Guests of ryokan in Kinosaki are provided with a yukata to wear for the duration of their stay. Yukata were originally designed as bathrobes to be worn inside hot spring baths. Over the years they have transformed from functional wearable towels to beautiful, casual garments that can be worn in a variety of settings such as when visiting a hot spring town or a festival. Yukata is very much a part of the culture of Kinosaki Onsen... a town meant for relaxation and comfort.
